Frater Family Wines is the epitome of family wine farming with each of their wines being made in hour of a family member. The Frater family arrived in South Africa from Scotland in 1878 and settled on the De Zoete Inval Estate in the Paarl Valley. The family purchased the farm for its good quality water which was perfectly suited for the washing of wool. After time they pioneered into successful fruit farming and 115 years ago built the original wine cellar, which is still in use today.
In 2005 5th Generation Wine maker John Robert Frater took over the farm and set about replanting all the old vineyards with the goal of producing clean, fruity wines with finesse and minerality. He produces what he calls “real” wines which taste like the fruit and terroir they originate from.
