Catchpole & Co El Cáliz Malbec – 2015
“This hand-picked Malbec will give the original Spanish varietal a run for it’s money.”
Good Malbec is big but soft wine. Argentina made the varietal a world-wide favourite, but Spain and Italy also produce exceptional examples. It only has a few plantings in SA, which we thought was crazy given the varietals perfect pairing with grilled red meats and other food favourites. The vines for Malbec are often shaped in a way that resembles a goblet, and the old Spanish word for “goblet” is “El Cáliz” hence the name of our example of this delightful cultivar. Hand-picked from 10 year old vines in Franschoek, this really is one of only a handful of single varietal Malbecs currently produced in South Africa, making it an exciting unique wine. Utterly delicious, and over-delivers for its price point.
