A good Malbec is a big but soft wine, an almost rustic version of Merlot with softer tannins. Argentina has made the varietal a world-wide favourite. The vines for Malbec are often shaped in a way that resembles a goblet, and the old Spanish word for “goblet” is “El Caliz” hence the name of our Stellenbosch example of this delightful cultivar. Having identified a superlative plot of vines deep within the Helderberg’s ‘Golden Triangle’ we set about making an expressive wine from whole-bunch pressing and gentle oak to add complexity. A full bodied, rich, dark and juicy wine with a deep structure.

Asian Beef Sliders with Pickled Salad & Hand Cut Fries East meets South (America!) in this delightful food and wine pairing. These Asian beef sliders work beautifully with a dark and decadent Malbec; a gorgeous varietal for which we have Argentina to thank for making a world-wide favourite. We love: Catchpole & Co El Caliz Malbec, a rich, full-bodied and juicy wine with deep structure, perfectly complements these sexy Asian-style sliders.
