Faustino I Rioja Tinto Gran Reserva 1964
“An exceptionally rare treat – a 53-year-old Gran Reserva from a leading Riojan Bodegas. Still winning awards and turning heads.”
A very special treat, a cellar matured Gran Reserva of 53 years. All maturation done in the cellar under expert and watchful eyes. 1964 was the maiden vintage for the Faustino brand, and it was an exceptional vintage for Rioja. Made from 85% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and viura, the wine was given 30 month barrel maturation before being bottled… and laid carefully in a quiet dark corner of the cellars to begin it’s 53 year journey to your glass.
The wine is a glimpse at another era of production, and a different set of values for greatness in wine. It comes from a time without 100 point scores, when greatness was more associated with light wines rather than heavy ones, and fine wine was a part of a civilized table instead of pageant style tastings.
Despite it’s years the wine drinks exceptionally well. It’s light and vibrant still, with spicy notes and red fruits in abundance. Truly it is hard to believe the wine is 53 years old.
