Skipskop Sangiovese 2016
“The classic Tuscan Nobel cultivar staking a claim in the Klein Karoo. The big producers will surely follow, but for now this is boutique brilliance at a superb price.”
The classic Tuscan grape has taken brilliantly to the dry climate of the Klein Karoo. This remote vineyard nestles into the foot of the Swartberg Mountains and produces fabulous fruit in very low yields. For us, this wine, although produced in tiny amounts, raises the question of why more exotic varietals (beyond those found in France) aren’t being planted in South Africa. The classic elements of Sangiovese are all here; bright cherry and redcurrants, but in a light style. Twelve months in barrel add extra complexity, and an attractive alcohol level of 12.7% keep the wine authentic. Insanely good with pink/rare Karoo Lamb. Perfect for spring and summer as it drinks exceedingly well slightly chilled, too.
